Mkomazi National Park

Hidden Safari Gem

Safari Treasures of Mkomazi, Tanzania

Mkomazi National Park is a magnificent national park in northern Tanzania and one of the hidden treasures among Tanzania Safari Destinations. Remote and originally difficult to reach, it was founded in 1951. In the northwest, you can see Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. And in the south, the Pare and Usambara mountains create a dramatic backdrop. To the north, Kenya’s Tsavo National Park borders the Mkomazi National Park. These two parks form one of the largest and most important protected ecosystems. They provide a standard base for herds of elephants, oryx, and zebras.

It has a classic arid area with gray-green nyika bush, old baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills. In other places, the scrub seas give way to savannah forests with umbrella acacias and mbugas – flat grassland valleys. The national park is typical of the dry landscape: giraffes, antelopes, small kudu, impala, and Grant’s gazelle. They share the park with elephants, buffalo, and numerous predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetah. And with some luck, you can also spot other animals, such as dik-diks, zebras, wildebeests, eland, and topi, regularly on a game drive. Visitors can see a total of 78 species of recorded mammals living here.

When To Go

Best Time To Visit Mkomazi National Park

The dry season, which lasts from June to October, is the ideal time to visit Mkomazi. Wildlife is simple to find when the days are warm, the nights are nice, and the plains are open. Lions and elephants follow closely behind herds of zebra, wildebeest, and antelope that cluster near rivers. Game drives and bush walks are the best safari activities right now. From November to May, the park becomes lush, and a multitude of migrating birds visit. This makes it an excellent time for birding, especially for travelers seeking a diverse Tanzania Safari experience.

Dry Season

May to October

The days are warm and sunny, with only a little rain. The thin plants make it easy to see animals gathering near water sources all across the park.

Wet Season

November to April

The countryside gets green, the mountains are clean, elephants come in, and migratory birds come in. This makes March to May a cheap time to go birding.

There are also big herds of elands that reside here; however, they are usually timid. The Kisima Rhino Sanctuary is a must-see since it is a great conservation success that lets you see black rhinos in their native habitat. The park is also home to oryx, lesser kudu, and gerenuk. There are more than 450 kinds of birds here, so the birdlife is just as diverse. The vulturine guineafowl, Shelley’s starling, and three-streaked tchagra are some of the most interesting birds to see. You may find ground birds, including ostriches, kori bustards, secretary birds, and hornbills, on the plains. Birdwatching is unforgettable because migrating birds like European rollers join the local flocks from November to April.
